Artifacts are items of unknown origin and classified as 'other' in the game. They can be randomly found by mining or by a naturalist. Having a working laboratory will enable the scientist to study it using the macroscope. Doing so will "give prestigious results" and add to the idol's tooltip: "This artifact has been studied, with prestigious results! It belongs in a museum!"
